Nobody likes to have missing teeth, but when you are able to have a replacement that will look and feel like your real teeth, then it does not seem that bad. When the teeth slide or shift around, this is not acceptable. This is where dental implants come into play.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials like titanium, surgically inserted into the jawbone. They consist of three parts: the implant fixture (the root), the abutment (the connector), and the crown (the visible tooth). Over time, the implant fuses with the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.
Dental implants offer a natural look and feel, improved comfort, and enhanced oral health compared to dentures or bridges. They prevent bone loss and maintain jaw structure, making them a reliable long-term solution for missing teeth.
Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants consist of two different types. These are endosteal implants and subperiosteal implants. The type of dental implant that the dentist decides to go with will be decided upon your overall health, shape, and size of the jawbone.
Endosteal Implants
When an endosteal implant is used, it will consist of titanium screws that are implanted surgically where the missing tooth exists. An endosteal is used more often than a subperiosteal implant. Normally, at least a month will be needed prior to the abutment being attached to complete the procedure.
Subperiosteal Implants
The subperiosteal implant is set above the jaw but beneath the gums. As time goes on, the implant gradually becomes infused into the jaw. Your dentist may prefer a subperiosteal implant for more than one reason - such as having a healthy space or bone loss is present.
The subperiosteal implant needs two separate procedures. For the first procedure, an incision will be made on the gum of the missing tooth and a mold will be taken of the space. The incision will be closed as you await the second appointment where the implant is inserted.
How Are Dental Implants Placed?
Placing dental implants involves several steps over a few months. First, an initial consultation and evaluation are done to create a treatment plan. If needed, preparatory procedures like extractions or bone grafting are performed. The implant fixture is then surgically placed into the jawbone under sedation. Over the next few months, the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once integrated, an abutment is attached to the implant, followed by the placement of a custom-made crown that matches the natural teeth. Follow-up visits ensure proper healing and implant function.
Caring For Dental Implants
Performing good oral health and ensuring that your dentist's instructions are followed are both important steps. Your dentist may suggest that soft foods be eaten so that your dental implant won't be affected negatively. As you follow up with the dentist, the sutures will be removed once healing is completed to ensure that growth is proper and infection is eliminated.
